Terry McAuliffe in Bristol: My Thoughts

by: Neal Osborne

Fri Jan 09, 2009 at 03:47:12 AM EST

Earlier this evening, I attended a town hall meeting with Terry McAuliffe here in Bristol.  There was a much larger crowd that I honestly expected.  The event was held at our culinary school, so obviously the food was A+.  While I enjoyed the food, I came mostly to hear what the former DNC chairman had to say.

The word of the night was definitely jobs.  I briefly considered counting the number of times Terry said "jobs," but I lost count around 30.  It would also seem Terry's favorite phrase is "grow the economy."

I have to say I was very impressed with him (of course, I went in with nearly zero expectations).  If nothing else, Terry McAuliffe is super-energetic, as I'm sure anyone who watched MSNBC over the last twelve months knows.  He worked the room very well, and I would venture a guess that he gained some supporters.

I have to say I'm still a little hazy on what McAuliffe's plans are.  I'll give him a break on that, however, since he only announced yesterday.  I came away with the sense that if he is elected, Terry will be an avid cheerleader for Virginia, and will be an excellent advocate for working men and women.

My preference for governor in this election is Brian Moran, but, as I've said before, Virginia Democrats are blessed to have three excellent candidates in the race.  I had my doubts about Terry McAuliffe being electable (or, for that matter, a serious candidate), but after hearing him tonight, I can say with confidence that Terry McAuliffe would make an excellent governor.

not all legislative, but, might wanna take a quick look at this

To me, Moran has worked for the state for years. Terry just came out of nowhere and decided to run.

However, Terry has said he would get rid of the Dillon Rule, which living in Northern Virginia in the suburbs of DC, I would love to see the Dillon Rule get nixed (http://www.terrymcauliffe.com/blog/dottie-goldman-of-virginia-beach-asks-about-the-dillon-rule).

And everyone says how Terry can raise a lot of money. Well, that's all well and good, and certainly can help you win, but I want someone who is running on good, sound, progressive policies. Not JUST someone who can outspend a republican.

Some minor issues
Democrats have long outspent Republicans in races first off.

Secondly, Terry McAullife is a carpetbagger, who saw his dreams of continued prominence in DC diminish is Hillary lost to that new Black Carter guy.

Terry's progressive nature will doom Virginia, as what Virginia needs is less government not more. Democrats are hardly promoters of sound economic policy in VA. Nice job Kaine, budgeting for a personal income increase in the middle of a recession and continuing to spend. Keynesian, as you claim, doesn't involve paying in both good and bad years, as you have done, and created this mess.

Terry will lose the moment Moran or Deeds decides to have a little fun, and confront him (on the spot) about an issue outside of NoVA.

I hope you are right about Terry.... I'm a Moran supporter, anyways....
I never said Republicans outspent Democrats, all I said is that the issue of being able to raise a bunch of money and spend it, as everyone claims Terry can do, isn't that important to me. What is important to me is how the person would govern.

And now you go off on a random tangent on Keynesian economics and Tim Kaine. 1. I am not a fan of Tim Kaine (this embodies it pretty well - http://onetwenty09.wordpress.c... 2. I'm not a blind supporter of Keynesian economics. I would actually partly agree with you on the issue of not spending money when you do not have it, especially when dealing with a budget - to spend money you don't have with a budget is an oxymoron.

However, to sit there and do nothing in government and fix nothing is not an option. Look at how the Repubs handled transportation - many virginia legislature republicans sat there and thought we didn't have to do a thing or asked for a bill that didn't really fix the problem - or adding  random "fees" -  that they called "not taxes" (even though they basically are), and end up barely funding transportation. OR maybe we should go back to Driver Abuser Fees (created by northern virginia republicans!). No thanks.

Clear stuff up
I didn't mean an attack on your views, but instead on McAullife who has been buddying up to Kaine lately, especially during the national elections. This association could lend to a transfer of staff etc., as McAulliffe does not have the same extent of a system as Warner and Kaine have built up (I doubt anyone could argue that) merely based on his lack of involvement in VA politics and familiarity among local leaders.

I would be able to stomach Moran if he promised to stay within budget, even if that meant raising taxes.

But seriously, the VA government has doubled in size in the last ten years and I doubt that incomes of Virginians have doubled over that time. Its time to DRASTICALLY cut back on state services and take both a scalpel and axe to the budget. This HAS to happen for the VA government to be solvent.

Gotchya.

Well i believe Kaine raised taxes every year he was in government - did he still go way over budget? ( i don't actually know I stopped following Kaine and his stupid decisions) - if he did, that is stupid.

As for Keynesian economics - I wouldn't really apply that to the virginia budget. From how I understand, the general idea of it, or at least how it might be applied/already has been applied in the US is at the national level - that we forget the deficit and try to get this economy back on the right track, which, if done in the right way, I think can work.

But keynesian economics at the state budget level is just stupid or not really Keynesian economics - i would just say it is Kaine being dumb and going over budget. Correct me if i'm wrong, but when he was going over budget it wasn't for an end result of "helping the economy" or "reducing the deficit," was it? Because that is what Keynesian economics is about.

And I would agree with you on Moran - I would like to see him stay within the budget, even if it does mean raising taxes. I don't think he has had any budget managing experience, but i would have to check that.

And on a more local level, I would love to see the Fairfax County budget up in NoVa get back on track (some should start watching the special election going on up in ffx county, Democrat Sharon Bulova, to me, is not very impressive.)
