How could they be so opposed to Signer?

Mike Signer is the best candidate for lt. Governor. And he's arguably more progressive than Jon and Jody.

Institutional support

aside from Southside, Signer doesn't have a lot of support from the county committee structure, and the people who tend to show up to events like these are people connected to that structure.  Same applies for McAuliffe - both Wagner and Moran have the vast majority of county committee endorsements, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the lay of the land.  That's why, aside from the St Patrick's Day Straw Poll, which McAuliffe used his field-staff advantage to increase turnout, he hasn't been winning at these sort of events.
