Tuesday's city council elections in Alexandria gave a Republican a seat, sending Democrats to wonder if they've lost their touch. However, things are not as they seem.

Stay tuned for a more involved post.

thanks for doing this
but think you could maybe use some colors that a little more varied?

what's with the Alexandria obsession?
Can we look forward to a similar analysis of the returns in the other Virginia localities that voted on Tuesday?

Two items
1) Vienna had a much less interesting election with all of one (1) polling place.

2) Republicans are crowing that they won seats in Alexandria, so we have to see whether it means anything.

It just all seems a bit too parochial
I don't recall a similar level of attention on this blog to the Cook victory in Braddock which has a population almost as big as Alexandria.

Because of their extremely low turn-out, municipal elections are prone to fluky results and tend not to tell you much.

True
Blogs are subject to the whims of whatever catches the blogger's attention (and where he is, I didn't write about the Braddock special as I was out of the country at the time).

Observers often wring too much meaning out of special elections, but this was a regular municipal election with a unique voting system that helped contribute to wonky results. Braddock's special election was exactly that--a special election.
