My name is Adam Fus. I' am a 24 year old Afghanistan and Iraq War veteran additionally a Purple Heart Recipient. As a corporal and a squad leader in the Marine Corps Infantry unit, 2nd Battalion 6th Marines Regiment, I've personally witnessed the American addiction to fossil fuels from the frontlines. Furthermore, I've at the same time observed the effect of fossil fuel emissions from my backyard. The Richmond Times Dispatch put on their August 23, Sunday paper an article about climate change and on it was a picture of the dried up lake bed to the Swift Creek Reservoir in Chesterfield County. I grew up 2 minutes from the Swift Creek Reservoir and drought has become routine there so you can say I have a personal understanding of what is going on. This is how I believe the system works. While I'm in Fallujah, Iraq being shot at all the time, being peppered by hand grenades and seeing friends die; that same raw materials that we are trying to secure is also drying out my community's drinking water. Therefore: why risk precious American lives on an out-of-date, dangerous, and polluting energy in the Middle East when we have the capabilities to make innovating, safe, and clean energy within our own borders? Conflict over oil and gasoline is preventable and it starts here with Operation Free. As a young Veteran in America, I value integrity. Yet, the American Petroleum Institute and their Energy Citizens have no comprehension of what sacrifices have been made in the name of oil and that is depressing beyond the horrors of war. Climate change is a battle everyone will be familiar with if the appropriate decisions and actions aren't executed. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 should take charge of showing proper respect to my fallen brothers. |
